Research is an integral part of the existing postgraduate medical training curriculum and is increasingly being taken up by undergraduate medical students also, in the form of short-term research fellowships. Despite this, the present-day medical curricula do not mandatorily train budding doctors in research methodology. The present book on research methodology is a welcome attempt to bridge this gap. This publication from the Physicians Research Foundation of the Association of Physicians of India is an excellent treatise for the beginner to understand the basic tenets of biomedical research. Written by more than 25 doctors from all parts of the country, this book is concise and simple to read. Aspects ranging from applying for a grant to funding one's research, to the actual conduct of research, the analysis of the results hitherto obtained, and finally, aspects related to writing the final manuscript emerging from the research are all dealt with appropriately.

The general quality and readability of most chapters are very good. However, the chapters on “Plagiarism” and “Bias, Error, and Confounding” are especially well written. Suggestions for possible improvement in the future editions include the consideration for a more logical sequence of the chapters. The Editors might also consider including sections on the conduct and interpretation of systematic reviews. Overall, this book is suitable as a first-read for students beginning research, as well as serves as a timely refresher for the more experienced researchers.
