Dear Editor,

We read the publication on “Serum adiponectin levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis” with great interest.[1] We would like to share ideas on this report. Veluri et al. concluded that “serum adiponectin concentration is decreased in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and was not associated with disease activity.“[1] In a recent meta-analysis, Cao et al. found the relationship between serum leptin level and disease activity index in RA.[2] Nevertheless, the measurement has to be the baseline level before any case management.[2],[3] In addition, the predictive property of adiponectin is good only if the patient has normal weight.[3] The lack of association in the study by Veluri et al. might be due to the effect of disease management. In addition, the adiponectin might be affected by serum lipid and renal function of the patients.[4]
