Primary Sjögren's syndrome thought initially as merely a disease causing dryness of mucosal surface has been of late recognized as a multisystem disease predominantly affecting female population and resulting in significant disability if not treated.
For the specialties involved in Sjögren's syndrome management such as trainees and specialists in rheumatology, ophthalmology, oral medicine and surgery, and others this volume from the Oxford Rheumatology Library is a very useful and practical pocketbook.
The volume contains well written, succinct, and comprehensive chapters on disease mechanisms, diagnosis, assessments, and laboratory investigations. Topical therapies both for oral and ocular manifestations as well as systemic therapies including biologicals have been discussed in depth. A chapter dealing with the lymphoma in the context of Sjögren's syndrome and other providing challenging case histories further enhance the utility of this volume. The appendix contains details of assessment tools such as ESSDAI and ESSPRI.
The layout is pleasing, and each chapter has key points highlighted at the beginning. Chapters are easy to read with useful subheadings and plenty of summary tables and figures showing important mechanisms and pathways of care. This book is indispensable for all interested and involved in the care of the patient's with Sjögren's syndrome.
