Apart from conducting good research, it is equally important to write the manuscript well and get it published to disseminate the knowledge and get the due recognition from it. In India, though good research is being done with the postgraduate research remaining the backbone of its academic output, many fail to reach its desirable end of being published in a scientific medical journal. One of the reasons is the lack of appropriate skills in preparing the manuscript. To this end, this useful book edited by senior journal editors with contributions from renowned authors and experienced researchers is most welcome.
The volume contains 26 well written chapters covering the basics and other not so well known aspects of manuscript writing. All components of Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (IMRAD) format, and others like writing an abstract, selecting the title, key words, and preparing the manuscript are well covered. Yet another chapter has addressed the lack of adequate knowledge regarding the use of bibliographic databases and correct methods of creating a list of references.
The book also deals with important topics related to publication ethics such as authorship, copyright, and scientific misconduct. Chapters on open access journals and electronic publishing highlight the pertinent issue of predatory journals. The book has not neglected the case reports, poster and podium presentations, and chapters on these are particularly useful for a beginner in this field.
Chapters are easy to read with plenty of examples to highlight relevant issues. Overall, this book on the art and science of writing and publishing in the medical journals fulfills the void in this area in India and also attempts to sensitize the readers to several other important issues.
