This handy “Pocketbook” has all that one needs to know about AS-SpA in the year 2017 in the 21 chapters. The book covers various aspects of the disease including the current treatment and future possibilities and includes socioeconomic aspects of the disease and illustrative “Case studies.” It also has a useful list of national and international organizations related to this disease. It is a richly illustrated book with more than 64 figures-some taken from latest international publications, others drawn specifically for this book, some simple line-drawings explaining the clinical procedures related to the examination and assessment of the disease and some simple cartoons to explain a point. In addition, several tables covering all the aspects of the disease, making it simple to read through.
An overview of the pathogenesis is covered in a few pages yet, in such depth that it would leave an imprint on the mind for a long time to come. The “diagnostic” versus “classification” criteria issue is discussed in a masterly way. The other chapters include the standard topics of epidemiology, etiology, disease subtypes, clinical manifestations classified under “musculoskeletal” and “extra-articular” components, physical examination and laboratory investigations including imaging and their interpretation. The chapter on “disease assessment” and “monitoring” is simply superb, makes life easy. The treatment recommendations, the agents to be used and the treatment strategy leaves nothing to “chance” or “conditional” recommendation!
Book has a weakness, i.e., of some information being “dated.” To offset that aspect author has succinctly covered the future possibilities in the treatment and drug development. Future editions would also hopefully overcome this issue.
This fabulous “pocketbook,” unique for the in-depth latest information on the topic of AS-SpA, is strongly recommended for the students, fellows, and trainees in rheumatology as well as for practising rheumatologists.
