Dear Editor,
Author statement: Inflammatory myositis literally takes the wind out you! The affected person can be a mere shadow of the former self. Recovery is often slow and requires patience and persistence. Nevertheless the best is that, with proper care at the proper time, it may be fully reversed. The thrill that the treating physician feels when she (or he) sees the former bedridden patient walking again can be beyond compare. To lighten up things and bring this message from an apparent patient's perceptive, we have crafted this rhyme. Being ever-optimistic physicians, as we feel all physicians should be, we have attempted to keep things jovial.
I was quite a hunk; the ladies loved to tease
When flexed with all my might, they went weak in the knees
I worked out all the time, no time for fatigue
Man, was I proud of my solid physique!
One day an aberrant T cell scouting for a thrill
Looked me up'n down; but I'm no easy kill
Hey good looking said the wily WBC
Tough luck I told her, I ain't got no MHC
What triggered the change, I'm really not sure
My WBC simply couldn't resist the lure
Was it my genes, a drug, or a virus that did woo?
Myositis hit me like a bolt from the blue
Oh shucks! I was soon loaded with MHC
T cells barged in unapologetically
Oh! Why would you attack your own?
They scoffed at me, we are autoimmune
Soon B cells came out of their unholy league
All those autoantibodies, they did unleash
I am weak and tired, swollen as can be
It's a matter of time before I atrophy
CPK, LDH, raised liver enzymes
Biopsy, EMG are the usual paradigms
Irritable was I as they poked needles into me
Increased insertional activity is what they would see
Pumped with steroids, I feel as good as new
Immunosuppressants come to the rescue
To miss my drugs, no I wouldn't dare
Infections are lurking, I gotta beware
The doc brings a consent form
Research for rare diseases seems to be the norm
New autoantibodies immunoprecipitate every passing day
I hope a breakthrough soon comes their way
With physiotherapy, I regain my glory
I flex again to everyone's envy and tell my story
The inspiring tale is already trending
Who doesn't love a happy ending?
