Prof. Beenapani Doley

1947–2020

On June 5, 2020 Prof Beenapani Doley, the teacher of the teachers from Jorhat, Assam suddenly left for heavenly abode creating a void in the mind of the medicos in Assam.

Prof. Doley was known as a strict disciplinarian and was always after cleanliness in the hospital. However, everyone close to her knows how affectionate she was for every students and colleagues; she always pushed them to reach greater heights in their professional and personal lives. Always dressed impeccably in a mekhela-sador, she was a motherly figure to all of us.

She did her MBBS and MD Medicine from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh in 1968 and 1974, respectively. She went to London for MRC Psychiatry, and after coming back served at Silchar Medical College and Assam Medical College. She was a rare breed of clinician with dual degree in medicine and psychiatry. After retiring as the head of the Department of Medicine from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh in 2006, she mentored many MBBS and MD students as a founder teacher in Agartala Govt. Medical College till 2016.

She was one of the founder members of the Indian Rheumatology Association, Assam Chapter. She regularly attended IRACON and was a known face among the senior members of IRA.

Even after retirement, she never lost interest in academics and was always among the 1st to arrive and last to leave in various continuing medical educations and conferences in the state and across India.

Although Professor Doley is no more amongst us physically, she has left a legacy in the field of medicine and rheumatology.
