Many a times, while managing patients with arthritis, to inform and educate them better, clinicians wonder “if only there was a comprehensive guide to managing arthritis, written in simple, easy-to-understand language by an actual expert who has a deep understanding of arthritis”. The present book strives to achieve aforementioned objectives as stated in its preface for both patients with arthritis and their clinicians.
Written by a rheumatologist with vast experience across the continents, the uniqueness of the book lies in its attempt to provide a holistic approach to understanding and living with arthritis. In this endeavor, author has utilized experts' contributions from the fields of nutrition, yoga, and rehabilitation. Together, they have addressed four important areas which patients with arthritis commonly seek information and guidance on, namely, medical explanation of arthritis and its treatment; role of diet in arthritis; exercise and arthritis and how to live full life with arthritis.
Each chapter discusses topics under several subheadings allowing better comprehension and is enriched by diagrams, photographs, frequently asked questions, and informative boxes. Initial chapters deal with various forms of arthritis and related conditions, while a later chapter on treatment and medications covers both basic and advanced options. A further chapter on alternative and complimentary therapy completes the discussion, adding several important caveats and cautions regarding the overall place and utility of such therapies in the evidence driven current treatments for arthritis. Next few chapters range from gut health and food in arthritis to tips regarding weight management. In the context of weight management, couples of chapters have been devoted to busting common food myths and detailing several sample recipes. Exercises, yoga, pilates, and physiotherapy are the subject of next chapters. The last section deals with critical issue of the acceptance of the diagnosis of arthritis and its implications by the individual. Herein, a chapter deals with the five phases of acceptance and its impact on the quality of life. A chapter on living with and managing pain of arthritis informs the reader of various interventions available for pain. The last chapter has few real-life scenarios of coping strategies which could be potentially used by patients suffering from arthritis.
Though primarily meant for “arthritis warriors,” i.e., patients with arthritis, this book would also be useful to clinicians treating arthritis as it provides answers to some commonly asked questions regarding diet, yoga, and exercises among others. It also sensitizes all stakeholders regarding individual and societal aspects of living with pain and relevant coping strategies. It can be appreciated that knowledge of these aspects has the potential to improve the chances of a successful consultation and better outcomes. Suggestions for improvement would be a little better editing and a through revision of the chapter on gut health to make it easier to understand for the patients, and a rethink on the utility or otherwise of a chapter named autoimmune protocol. Overall, this is a useful book for patients with arthritis and clinicians managing arthritis.
